The Vought F4U Corsair was the most capable carrier-based fighter-bomber of the World War II, featuring the largest engine available at the time—the 2,000 hp, 18-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial. Its distinctive inverted gull wing design allowed for a shorter undercarriage while accommodating the large propeller required by its powerful engine, giving it both striking looks and superior performance.
